This is a powerful storyline with interesting characters and fantastic descriptions of locations. I was quite surprised, I bought this on a whim and after I got into it I realized I made a great pick. Since I finished it I keep asking myself questions like,"Do we really control our own destiny." This was one of the best stories I have ever read.
Purchased Power by first time (!) author Dennis Sheehan has to be read to be believed. It's a taught, tense thriller filled with espionage, intrigue, and engaging characters that will keep you turning the pages. Think of it as a more intelligent Tom Clancy novel, with a level of detail that could only be crafted by someone who really knows their stuff. Highly recommended.

Dennis Sheehan's "Purchased Power" is an intriguing inside look at the the corrupt leaders who helped China gain important missile technoloogy, such as for multiply integrated re-entry vehicles (MIRVs), the nuclear missile targeting system, that was facilitated by enormous bribes from Chinese businessmen in the Lippo Group, backed by a Chinese general on the Politburo during the late 1990s. While the book seems to absolve the Chinese of complicity, which is an error on Sheehan's part, it's nonetheless a gresat read. The real story made headlines, but Sheehan's takes you inside the corrupt deals, the cynicism of power and even the death of Ron Brown, a real Secretary of Commerce during the Clinton Administration. Although the author has a lot of spelling errors and doesn't always write that well (he apparently had some Chinese help, judging from the syntax and spelling of the errors, in writing the book), and can sometimes be tedious, the historical background to this story make it an unnerving and juicy read. It's hard to put down.
